Beyond academics, Equity students play in the orchestra, lead through student council, take part in service projects and celebrate together — from the International Fair to Music in the Air and the Spring Program.
Traditions
The year, as students remember it.
A small school keeps its traditions close. These are the events and programs families describe when they talk about Equity.
International Fair
Every year, during the month of September, each grade learns about one specific country: its culture, traditions, economy, geography, and more of its beauty.
We have guest speakers from these countries who graciously give us their time to talk about the wonders of their homeland. They even bring treats for our kids!
On the day of our International Fair, the last Friday of September, we welcome our school community into each classroom, which the teachers and students have decorated, and the students themselves act as guides to their country. Each grade also prepares a traditional dance from the country they studied, which is presented to the entire school community.
We finish our International Fair with an international food sale, with items donated by the parents. All proceeds go towards Fundeq – EAS Service Project Fund.
Music in the Air
On the last Friday of November, our campus fills with music. Music in the Air is the concert where our Elementary and Upper School orchestras take the stage.
Our orchestra teachers are working musicians, members of some of Guatemala's leading musical institutions: the Guatemalan Symphony Orchestra, the Banda Sinfónica Marcial de Guatemala and the Conservatorio Nacional de Música Germán Alcántara. Each year they prepare a special program for both orchestras, so our students learn from professional musicians and share their music with our whole school community.
Spring Program
In the last week of April, Equity leaves campus for the theater. The Spring Program is a very special show, and every year it's built around a different theme. Past themes include Broadway, Half a Century of Song and Dance, Night at the Movies and Cruise Around the World.
Every Elementary class, from Pre-K through 6th grade, takes the stage, together with our 12th graders, and students in grades 7 through 11 can join with their own group performances. Our Elementary and Upper School orchestras also prepare a special concert inspired by that year's theme, so the music and the show come together as one celebration.
Student Council (STUCO)
At Equity, students have a real voice in their school. Two student councils give them hands-on experience of leadership and service, each in a way suited to their age.

Feria Chapina
A celebration of Guatemalan culture, food and tradition.
Field trips
The Children's Museum, IRTRA, the zoo, a farm day and an end-of-year pool day are among the trips families mention.
Poetry Slam
A showcase where students perform original poetry for the school and for families.
Science Fair
A showcase where students present their own science projects to the school and to families.
Service projects
Every student and staff member gives hands-on service hours during the year; students plan and carry out projects for the less fortunate in Guatemala.
We Love to Read Day
A monthly Reading for Relaxation contest encourages reading at home; the principal sends books home as gifts for reading goals and birthdays.
Campus
Room to run.
A covered court for assemblies and sport, a gymnasium, a playground, and a campus small enough that every corner is used.
Small buses with GPS tracking bring students from across the city; drivers and monitors stay in contact with the school throughout the route.
